The same day Mitt Romney looks like a nail-bitingly genuine threat to the Presidency, Substance is pretty chuffed about Be Brave, the new album from Drop Out Venus. Indulge your dark, morose and pissed-off side. They did:

We called it Be Brave for the simple reason that we had to learn how to be unafraid and apply it in practice despite being shy and freaky people. The Drop Out Venus family would like to thank you for being a drop out.

Carrying on in the vein of their recent ‘Elastic Teen Rent’ 7-inch, there’s the usual heavy dose of the gothic, sinister sexuality and not-so-cute one-liners of Iva Moskovich’s death-sigh lyrics; alongside a stellar second-half, including ‘Hangman’ (melody and vocal lines sound like a Figure 8 Elliott Smith) and ‘Mixtape’ as dysfunctional an anthem as opener ‘Love in Vain’ – the song that first got us excited about DOV in the first place.

You can stream and buy Be Brave here.
