The Strypes are four lads, ranging from the surprising 15 to the absurd 13-years, from southern Ireland with a taste for Bo Diddley blues, Merseybeat and Railway-era Stones R’n’B. By the looks of YouTube, the band have been racking up an impressive list of covers of everyone from Eddie Holman, The Who, Canned Heat and their beloved Beatles.. With a new EP on the way – Young, Gifted and Blue – the NME wedged them in at No.1 on their Bands to Watch back in October. We reckon they spoke truer than they maybe meant.

Listen to their pub-backroom Fratelli-jukin’ version of ‘Got Love If You Want It’.

So The Strypes have a taste for all that blues stuff, but there’s something a bit self-conscious and Monkees-ish about it. Like they've got a savvy Dad who used to know so in the business and smokes cigars a lot. (Maybe they do.) The Beatles mop’n’rollneck-top and sunglasses inside looks a bit pidgin-Sixties, doesn’t it?

“They’re stupidly young, but they really have it.” So says Paul Weller, showcasing the mod scene’s occasional foible that if someone plays the right song and they dress retro-Carnaby-cool, they’re alright. It doesn’t matter if it’s particularly interesting or decent or not. Weller proved the same the other week at his Radio 4 Mastertapes recording at Maida Vale when he got a chap from The Lost
Boys on while he went for a piss midway through. Said Lost Boy, Daniel Ash, was a bit shit.

The Strypes on the other hand aren’t shit, they're a band in development. It’ll be really interesting to see what they do when it comes to their own songwriting.
